Referral Tracking
Understanding Your Social Networks
Referrals allow you to effortlessly map the social networks of influence within your organization. Who is influencing others to sign up? Which members have the greatest reach? This system helps you identify natural leaders and connectors, making it possible to leverage social influence for maximum campaign effectiveness.
How Referrals Work
The system automatically tracks referrals by appending a referral tag (?r=
) to page URLs whenever someone shares content. This happens seamlessly in several ways:
- Share-with-Friends Links: When someone completes a form and shares it, their referral code is automatically included
- Text Blasts and Email Blasts: Any page links created with merge tags via text blast, email blast, or text templates, include referral codes
- Page QR Codes: QR codes sent as text attachments include the referral code
- Field Organizer App: Adding new people through the "+" section tracks the referral
Every user gets a unique referral code (like nncl_8W9
) that you can see in their profile under the "Relationships" section.
Viewing Referrals
Individual Profiles
Check someone's profile and look at the "Relationships" section on the right to see:
-
Their unique referral code
-
Who referred them (if applicable)
-
How many people they've referred
-
Network Analytics
To see who's driving the most referrals, go to All People and go to the chart view, and group by "Most Referred Page Submissions". You can view this across all pages or filter by specific campaigns.
The system also provides filters to help you identify key influencers - you can search by referral count, who referred specific users, or track referral chains back to their original source.
Activity Timeline
Referrals appear in user activity timelines as batched entries like "Referred 4 form submissions to Wage Theft Settlement Petition." Click "see who" to view individual referrals and see whether they're new people or existing users taking additional actions.
Email Notifications
The system sends automatic email notifications to keep everyone informed about referral activity:
Immediate Notifications: Sent right when someone signs up through a referral link, notifying both the referrer and any detected agents/organizers who facilitated the referral.
Daily Digest: A batch email sent each morning at 9 AM summarizing all referrals from the previous day.
These notifications help you stay connected to your network's growth and recognize members who are actively bringing in new supporters.
Managing Notifications
Users can control their notification preferences in their profile settings:
- Turn off notifications when others use their referral links
- Turn off notifications for referrals they facilitate as organizers
- Unsubscribe entirely through links in the email footers
Organizations can also disable all referral notifications in Organization Settings under the "Enable Referral Notifications" toggle.
Why This Matters
Understanding your referral networks reveals the hidden social dynamics of your organization. You'll discover which members are natural connectors, which campaigns spread most effectively through personal networks, and how to strategically engage your most influential supporters.
This isn't just about tracking numbers - it's about understanding the human relationships that drive your movement's growth and learning how to nurture and leverage those connections for maximum impact.
